In loving memory of

Keith Jackson

8 October 1954 — 14 August 2026

This page is for everyone who knew Keith. Please add a photograph or share a memory or a story.

Scientist, racing follower and reluctant thrower-awayer of anything that might one day prove useful.

Keith Jackson

His story

A life remembered
in moments.

Keith Jackson was born in Haydock on 8th October 1954, and passed away on 14th August 2026, aged 71.

He graduated from Oxford before joining the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington, where he spent more than thirty years as a senior government scientist, helping maintain the measurement standards on which countless other things depend.

He never really switched that off. At home there was always something in pieces, whether electronics or computers, and he was always keen to try out whatever B&Q had sold him that week. No job in the house was ever simply a repair. It was an experiment.

And there were the horses. He was a lifelong follower of the racing, which is no great surprise in someone born in Haydock with the course on his doorstep.

He was a man of routine, and navy blue.

He leaves his sister Susan and his brother-in-law Peter, and his nephews and niece Matthew, Jonathan and Rebecca, to whom he was always Uncle Keith.

His funeral will be held on Tuesday 15th September 2026 at St James the Great, Haydock, the parish he was born in. Rebecca and Jonathan will give the tributes.

So sad to hear that Keith is no longer with us, but cheered by being able to attend the funeral, meet his family and help them fill in some of the blanks on the 'measuring things' as Keith used to describe what he did at NPL. I was also fortunate to be Keith's flat mate for many years as we both had rooms in the same bedsit place and then split the bills on a shared a house together until he departed NPL. Keith's intellectual, problem solving and science skills are described by other messages, and I can only echo what others have said - a unique talent for science but an inability to count 'just one' beer :-) He was a worthy opponent on the building 3 croquet lawn in our 'Blues' matches. He took over as my PhD supervisor after a colleague retired and was always helpful and kind. A sad loss to his friends and colleagues and to science in general.

I am sorry to hear of Keith’s passing. He was a colleague at NPL for many years and my manager for a few years. He was a great problem solver and the go to person when the maths got particularly difficult. As well as discussing the theory of optical and Xray metrology, he was also happy to share the finer points of betting on the horses. A rounded knowledge, willingly and considerately shared.

Sad to hear of Keith's passing and love to his family and friends. I worked under Keith for a number of years at NPL. He was my best boss ever. He always astounded me by taking a problem right back to first principles, but never quite gave me the full answer. I respected his knowledge and friendship. We enjoyed work together and also enjoyed a few drinks from time to time. He lead the tea room gossip and fun banter and always had a side project on the go, e.g. the ginger beer David mentions in his message. Hilarious! I will always remember Keith with great fondness and think of him every time I see a hole in my jumper x
